A lot of the AI you use is moving off distant servers and onto the device in your hand. Newer phones and laptops ship with chips designed for AI, and that is changing where the work happens — and what happens to your data.
Why move AI onto the device
Three reasons. Speed: a local model responds instantly with no round trip to a server. Availability: it works on a plane or with no signal. And privacy: what never leaves your device cannot be logged, leaked or used for training. For features like summarising your messages or transcribing a voice note, that last point is a big deal.
The division of labour
This is not the end of cloud AI. The pattern emerging is a split: quick, private, everyday tasks run on the device, while the heaviest reasoning still calls out to a large model in the cloud. Increasingly you will not know or care which one answered — only that it was fast and kept your data close.
Why it matters
On-device AI makes the privacy conversation less abstract. When the processing happens locally, “we do not send your data anywhere” stops being a promise and becomes a fact of the architecture. Expect it to become a selling point, and a reasonable thing to look for.
