Google is integrating Gemini deeply into Android 17. The AI assistant becomes a system-level feature on supported devices, replacing Google Assistant as the default and gaining the ability to act across apps.
System-wide AI
Users can ask Gemini to summarize notifications, write replies, search within apps, and control device settings. Many features run on-device using Gemini Nano models, while complex queries are handled in the cloud.
App actions
Gemini can interact with third-party apps to complete tasks like booking rides, ordering food, or editing photos. Developers can register app actions through updated APIs.
Privacy controls
Google says users can choose which apps and data Gemini can access. On-device processing is used whenever possible to limit cloud data exposure.
