
The Turing Test is a test of a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour indistinguishable from a human. Proposed by Alan Turing in 1950, a machine passes if a person conversing with it cannot reliably tell it is not human.
What it means in plain English
Turing sidestepped the hard question “can machines think?” with a practical one: can a machine converse so convincingly that a human judge cannot tell it apart from another person? In the test, a judge chats with both a human and a machine without seeing them, and tries to identify which is which. If the machine fools the judge, it passes.
For decades it was a landmark goal; today, with fluent chatbots, its usefulness as a measure of real intelligence is debated.
A simple example
A judge holds two text conversations — one with a person, one with an AI — and has to guess which is the machine. If they cannot tell better than chance, the AI has passed the Turing Test.
Why it matters
The Turing Test shaped how people think about machine intelligence for over 70 years. Understanding it clarifies an important distinction: convincingly imitating human conversation is not the same as genuine understanding — a gap very relevant to how we judge today’s AI.
